Come out a meet fellow S60 users in the Chicago area. The group will be meeting at the Chicago Nokia Flagship store. Last night was the March S60 Users meet up at the Nokia Flagship Store. Besides the usual crowd, the N97 and N86 both showed up dressed in white. The N97 has really come a long way since the first time we played with it. The software has matured incredibly in only 2 months. With a scheduled release some time in June Nokia has a real winner on its hands. The N86 also was dressed to impress in white. Mark, of The Nokia Blog fame, took some great videos last night.

While discussing the “Why I S60” post on Howard Forums user, sjhong, had the great idea to start a contest to great a slogan based on S60. We asked the community to complete the thought, “I S60…”. The top ten entries will be entered into a public poll and the top two from that poll will win a S60 Prize pack! (T-shirt, Pens, Flashlights and other goodies). Shakkan on HowardForums asked me as an Apple user who chose a S60 devices (N85 and the 5800XM) over the iPhone, why? Here is my response.
I have owned both the iPhone and iPhone 3G and both times i went back to my Nokia. The original iphone lasted me about 3 months but the lack of real applications and crap camera brought me back to S60. The iphone 3G was much better. lots of apps, but the camera was still a deal breaker. The other thing that has since been fixed was the HORRIBLE battery life and 3g performance. Both were fixed with firmware updates.
So why S60? I guess it comes down to power. The ability to truly multitask is a real plus. To really enjoy an apple product you have to agree to use it how Steve wants you to use it. I am ok with that paradigm for OSX, iTunes, iPod. But my mobile has to be “open”. I demand to much from it. For me the iphone would be perfect if they added two things. 3-5mp camera with decent optics and ….. wow i guess i don’t have an “and” any more.
The iphone is sexy and that drew me in both times to buy, but something about it always let me down and my nokia was always there to take me back. Honestly, i will probably buy whatever iPhone is announced this summer, maybe i will keep it maybe i won’t.
Ricky Cadden (aka rcadden on twitter, howardforums, and Symbian-Guro) has decided that NYC should not have all the fun and is going to organize a Dallas S60 meet up. Head over to the thread on howardforums to join the conversation. In the next few months we might have as many as 5 S60 meetups happening international!
Know what NYC and Chicago have in common? Streets named Broadway, sky scrapers, and a Nokia Flagship Store. I have seen a bunch of interest for S60 meet ups in other parts of the country (and world), so I am reaching out to the community to see if there really is enough interest. Want a Chicago meet up? Come join the monthly meet up of S60 users. The ever growing group meets at the Nokia flagship store where we often get to play with prototype devices and give feedback directly to Nokia reps. In the past we have gotten the chance to play with the N97, the N86 and the E75. Who knows what Nokia will bring us to play with. After the store closes we head out in search of food and drink. Come on out and have some fun! See you all there.
